The Giver Gives More

12 11 2009

Oddly in the novel The Giver the main character, Jonas has a better relationship with a new found stranger, otherwise known as the Giver, then he has  or will ever have  with his own parents.

Even though through the novel Jonas gets close and familiar with the Giver, at the beginning of the book Jonas seems to have a better relationship with this man he just met. It is because unlike Jonas’ parents, the Giver loves and cares for Jonas. He feels bad for the pain he gives him and happy when he gives Jonas memories of happiness. The Giver also treats Jonas like a son, talking to him and answering questions.

Jonas’ parents on the other hand don’t show as much love or compassion for their son. They even said once when Jonas asked them if they loved him that they they liked him and enjoyed him but they did not truly love him. However, I only found this lack of a relationship to be because his parents, unlike Jonas, don’t really know what it is to feel love. However, the fact that they can’t love puts an obvious damper on their bond with Jonas.

Autumn Begins

22 09 2009

Today Autumn has officially begun according to my Mead planner… so it’s debatable if you ask me. Anyhow I don’t know about you readers, but I am officially ready for fall, or autumn, whatever you want call it.  I think it is about time for the shifty weather to be over. One day it is raining and the next sunny with a high of 83.  Besides autumn means Halloween, Thanksgiving, and that winter is right around the corner. Also it means my birthday. This post really has no meaning or depth to it, but I just thought you would like to know it is officially autumn, well according to Mead that is :) .

FPS Is Ago

21 09 2009

The other night my FPS group met, M105 is our name. If you do not know what FPS is, it is Future Problem Solving. To some it is torture and to others a breath of fresh air. Our group met for two hours and without a future scene we went over the research in about thirty minutes and then ate for thirty more. After that we did some truly unnecessary team building, oh well :) . This consisted of head stand contests FPS scrabble for respect and our FPS group service project discussion. The thing this post seems to be not really explaing, but should be the main point is I am just wondering if any of you readers out there are participants in FPS because to me it seems as if my town is the only one… even though I know it is not.

ta ta for now (ttfn)

Julia&Julie

13 09 2009

Today I went with a friend to see a movie called Julia and Julie. It is based on two true stories, the story of Julia, and the story of Julie. The movie was about how a normal woman, newly married, being bored with herself not knowing what to do with her life. Then she decides she wants to cook every recipe of the 524 that are in Julia Child’s cookbook in just a year. It is a very good movie. However on the way home from the movie I was thinking that maybe it would be fun to do something like this. Of course I am not going to work through Julia Child 524 recipes, and I am not going to cook something every day. I was thinking maybe I could cook recipes from a dessert recipe book (MMMM) and just cook something every weekend or so. What do you think? I’ll update you when I figure something out for sure and find a cookbook to follow.

GRR Laptops

7 09 2009

Having a laptop in 6th grade was possibly the single coolest thing since sliced bread. However, this year I am not sure I am so excited about them. I have used my laptop more in Spanish then in all of my main classes combined.. woo hoo :( . Also this year the laptops allow no freedom at all. Everything being blocked at home just doesnt quite make sense to me. The other students have not recieved there laptops quite yet so the possibilities with the laptops might increase, but it is just not the same as Mrs. Plantan’s class. I hope in the end grass will be greener on the other side of this school year. :)

Hybrids Eating Up Rare Minerals

31 08 2009

I was going to write a post based on an article I read on the internet but I will just show you the article as it was written. This is written by Steve Gormon. It is kind of odd that something that was supposed to help our Earth is eactually harming it…

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Prius hybrid automobile is popular for its fuel efficiency, but its electric motor and battery guzzle rare earth metals, a little-known class of elements found in a wide range of gadgets and consumer goods.

That makes Toyota’s market-leading gasoline-electric hybrid car and other similar vehicles vulnerable to a supply crunch predicted by experts as China, the world’s dominant rare earths producer, limits exports while global demand swells.

Worldwide demand for rare earths, covering 15 entries on the periodic table of elements, is expected to exceed supply by some 40,000 tonnes annually in several years unless major new production sources are developed. One promising U.S. source is a rare earths mine slated to reopen in California by 2012.

Among the rare earths that would be most affected in a shortage is neodymium, the key component of an alloy used to make the high-power, lightweight magnets for electric motors of hybrid cars, such as the Prius, Honda Insight and Ford Focus, as well as in generators for wind turbines.

Close cousins terbium and dysprosium are added in smaller amounts to the alloy to preserve neodymium’s magnetic properties at high temperatures. Yet another rare earth metal, lanthanum, is a major ingredient for hybrid car batteries.

Production of both hybrids cars and wind turbines is expected to climb sharply amid the clamor for cleaner transportation and energy alternatives that reduce dependence on fossil fuels blamed for global climate change.

Toyota has 70 percent of the U.S. market for vehicles powered by a combination of an internal-combustion engine and electric motor. The Prius is its No. 1 hybrid seller.

Jack Lifton, an independent commodities consultant and strategic metals expert, calls the Prius “the biggest user of rare earths of any object in the world.”

Each electric Prius motor requires 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of neodymium, and each battery uses 10 to 15 kg (22-33 lb) of lanthanum. That number will nearly double under Toyota’s plans to boost the car’s fuel economy, he said.

Toyota plans to sell 100,000 Prius cars in the United States alone for 2009, and 180,000 next year. The company forecasts sales of 1 million units per year starting in 2010.

As China’s industries begin to consume most of its own rare earth production, Toyota and other companies are seeking to secure reliable reserves for themselves.

Reuters reported last year that Japanese firms are showing strong interest in a Canadian rare earth site under development at Thor Lake in the Northwest Territories.

A Toyota spokeswoman in Los Angeles said the automaker would not comment on its resource development plans. But media accounts and industry blogs have reported recently that Toyota has looked at rare earth possibilities in Canada and Vietnam.

I Miss It..

30 06 2009

Does anybody want to go back to school.. I do. If you REALLY know me you know I absolutely love school. At the end of this past school year i found myself complete and well rounded. I had softball going on which gave me an extra curricular activity and then I had school which keeps me busy as I need to be… although I was ready for a little break from trigonometry and World War II. Now that summer is here I am bored with myself! I see a friend every once in a while, find myself shopping and babysitting often.. but mostly I spend my day tweeting around or playing on game sites. Now I am absolutley 100% positive I need school to be sane.. I miss school and all my friends and teachers.
